When a railway freight car undergoes depot repair, the air brake on the car is inspected and overhauled at the same time. As part of this work, the maintenance of each air reservoir must strictly meet the following requirements to keep the braking system safe, airtight and fully functional.
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Drain plug | The drain plug must be dismantled and impurities and accumulated water removed from the reservoir. When reassembling, the threaded part of the plug must be coated with lead powder oil or wrapped with PTFE tape. |
| Cracks | Any crack in a reservoir must be repaired by welding. After welding, a hydrostatic test at 900 kPa must be carried out and held for 3 minutes without leakage. |
| Depth limit | When the crack or corrosion depth exceeds 2 mm, the reservoir must be replaced. When assembly bolts are loose, the reservoir must be reassembled. |
| Hanger bracket and clamp | Repair the hanger bracket when it is cracked or bent. Repair the hanger clamp when its corrosion depth exceeds 25%, and replace it when it is cracked or damaged. |
Cleaning is the first and most important step. Because compressed air carries moisture and impurities, the reservoir must be opened so that dirt and accumulated water can be drained away. When the drain plug is refitted, sealing the threads with lead powder oil or PTFE tape prevents air leakage and stops moisture from entering the system again. A clean, well-sealed reservoir keeps the whole braking circuit working reliably.
Any crack found on a reservoir is a serious safety concern, as it can allow compressed air to escape and weaken the pressure vessel. Cracks must therefore be repaired by welding, and welding alone is not enough. After welding, the reservoir must pass a hydrostatic test at 900 kPa, held for three minutes with no leakage. This pressure test confirms that the repair has restored the reservoir's strength and airtightness before the car returns to service.
Maintenance decisions are guided by clear limits. When the crack or corrosion depth exceeds 2 mm, welding is no longer sufficient and the reservoir must be replaced outright. Loose assembly bolts must be re-tightened and the reservoir reassembled. For the mounting parts, the hanger bracket is repaired when cracked or bent, while the hanger clamp is repaired when its corrosion depth exceeds 25% and replaced when it is cracked or broken. These limits protect both repair quality and operating safety.
Correct installation is just as important as repair. All air reservoir parts must be installed in the correct position and firmly secured. Where the original design uses a wooden pad between the reservoir and the hanger seat, a damaged pad must be replaced with a nylon pad or a short-fiber reinforced rubber pad; if the car was originally fitted with a nylon pad, a nylon pad must still be used.
| Configuration | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Round-steel U-shaped hanger with rubber or nylon pad | A lock (back) nut must be fitted. |
| Bolt-mounted reservoir | A spring washer must be fitted. |
| Mounting bolts | Inserted from top to bottom (except where there is no installation space), with a flat washer added on the slotted-hole side. |
| Bolt tightness | After tightening, the thread must protrude beyond the nut by at least one thread but not more than one nut thickness (U-shaped pipe hanger clamps and reservoir hanger clamps excepted). |
Reliable air reservoir maintenance is essential for safe railway operations.
